Fire Retardant Hook and Loop

Fire retardant hook and loop, or FR hook and loop, is chemically treated to be fire resistant. VELCRO® Brand fire retardant hook and loop can be requested on our specialty product order form.

DuraGrip® brand fire retardant hook and loop fasteners are nylon hook and loop fasteners that are chemically treated to slow the material burn speed in order to pass FAA 25.853(b) testing methods. Fire resistant hook and loop tape is used on bunker gear or turnout gear for firefighters as well as in aircrafts that require material that is fire retardant. This fireproof adhesive product is available in 1”, 1.5” and 2” widths in Black only. The operating temperature range for DuraGrip® brand fire retardant hook and loop is -60 F to 280 F. Average burn length for the hook is 2.13 seconds. A burn certificate for our fire-retardant tapes is available upon request.

Additional FAQs:

Q. At what temperature does VELCRO® melt?

A. Standard VELCRO® hook and loop made of nylon typically begins to soften around 320°F (160°C) and melts around 500°F (260°C). Polyester versions may have a slightly higher tolerance. Always check material specifications for heat-sensitive applications.

Q. Is VELCRO® fire resistant?

A. Standard VELCRO® is not inherently fire-resistant, but fire-retardant versions are available. These are chemically treated to meet specific safety standards like FAA 25.853(b) and are suitable for aviation, industrial, and emergency service use.

Q. Is VELCRO® flammable?

A. Yes, untreated VELCRO® made from nylon or polyester is flammable. However, fire-retardant VELCRO® is designed to slow burn rates and self-extinguish once the flame source is removed.

Q. Is VELCRO® safe to use near heat sources?

A. It depends on the material type:

  • Standard VELCRO® should be kept away from high-heat sources.
  • FR-rated VELCRO® can be used near moderate heat sources (up to 280°F). Always confirm the product’s temperature rating before use in heated environments.

Q. Can VELCRO® catch fire?

A. Yes, regular VELCRO® can catch fire if exposed to open flames or extreme heat. Fire-retardant versions are safer in such settings and are designed to resist ignition and reduce burn length.
