The following are pictures from a microscope showing up close the woven hook and loop. The LOOP is the soft fuzzy side of the VelcroŽ brand fastener and the HOOK is the rougher side. The HOOK is made by chopping a loop a third of the way from the top. The BRRRRRRIP sound you hear is the hook snapping back after pulling free of the loops.
